It was senior night for the Roadrunners’ women’s volleyball team Tuesday, and they did not disappoint. The now 15-6 squad tallied a crucial NJAC win, dominating their opponent, the 11-10 Rutgers-Camden Scarlet Raptors, in straight sets.
For senior captain Kaitlin Mac Iver, it was undoubtedly a night she will never forget.
“These four years were very memorable and meaningful,” Mac Iver said. “To think that my time as a collegiate athlete is winding down a lot faster than expected is extremely sad, but I am very grateful for the experience that I was given here as a Roadrunner.”
Along with Mac Iver, fellow captain Emily Harris, Cathryn Smart and Nicole Herrmann were honored before the game to congratulate them on their achievements as Roadrunners.
The night was made a little sweeter with a win, and the seniors showed out for their friends and family in attendance. Mac Iver led the team with 35 assists while fellow captain Emily Harris saved points on the defensive side with 14 digs. Senior Nicole Hermann also dished out seven assists in the match.
The young guns also played a critical role in the team’s victory. Sophomore outside hitter Larysa Iwaskiw was once again the leader of kills in this match, recording 21 of them on 52 attempts. Juniors Emily Guzman and Rachel Selmore contributed as well with 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
With the NJAC tournament only two weeks away, the Roadrunners 5-2 conference record secures them a spot to battle the others vying for the conference title. The Roadrunners’ eyes are set on hoisting the championship trophy, and with their recent performance, there is a clear chance that could happen.
“With the NJAC Tournament coming up, we hope to be able to finally make this our year,” Mac Iver said. “We have a group of very strong, talented, and versatile players that, as a team, can really take it all the way.”
The lady Roadrunners will look to carry their momentum and make a statement next week in a NJAC tournament preview against rival Stockton University, who are undefeated in conference play. The match will be held at Stockton on Oct. 27 at 7 p.m.
