The sun was shining and kids were smiling as students and local families came to enjoy the upbeat atmosphere at Ramapo’s Trunk or Treat. Located in the tennis court lots on Friday, Trunk or Treat was sponsored by the Center for Student Involvement. From 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., parents from the surrounding area brought their children to the event to grab handfuls of pre-Halloween treats while admiring the festively decorated cars filling the lot.
Each car was decorated according to a unique theme and each vehicle was entered in a contest judging the decorators’ creativity. The Ramapo men’s lacrosse team won, receiving a $500 prize for having the best car, which featured an interactive game that allowed the kids to play for their candy.
Sororities, fraternities and clubs all participated in delivering spooky Halloween spirit to the young children roaming the event. The sorority Delta Phi Epsilon decorated their cars in Cookie Monster, Spongebob and The Wizard of Oz themes. Although they did not win the contest, their holiday spirit remained.
“I love dressing up for Halloween, and Trunk or Treat helped to get in the spirit,” DPE member and junior Holly Kiffer said.
“I loved seeing all the little kids in costume, and they were so cute when they would come up to us,” she continued.
Local parent Amanda Vox brought her family to the event:
“It’s so cold – they’re shivering – but they would never pass up candy,” she said, referring to her two children, who were excited to show off their scarecrow and police officer costumes.
“This is so close to my house, and a great way to take my kids out,” Vox continued, as just one of the many parents thankful for the event keeping their children entertained.
“Hands down, the baby in the astronaut costume was my favorite kid all day,” said sophomore Sumner LaForge, who helped decorate the car for the Sigma Delta Tau sorority.
“We put a lot of personal handmade touches on our cars, to make them original and stand out,” she continued. “We did a Candy Land-themed car and a Charlie Brown the Great Pumpkin car, too. It was so much fun.”
LaForge loved seeing the kids and handing out candy, saying it was a fun way to give back while hanging out with other organizations. It was worth her while to see the children having such a fun time.
Halloween is one of the most anticipated holidays of many American children’s lives. Each organization did its utmost best to put on a fun atmosphere for the children, and it appeared as if their combined efforts paid off. Seemingly every child left Trunk or Treat smiling ear-to-ear, with bits of fun-size candy bars stuck in their teeth.
