Although the Ramapo women’s lacrosse team was ranked sixth out of seven teams in an NJAC preseason poll, the team came out ready to make a statement in their season opener against Maritime College.

The Lady Roadrunners posted a dominating 15-4 win last night in their first game of the 2017 season.

“It was really awesome to win our first game,” said sophomore midfielder Molly Warner.

“We played hard and kept working hard even though we were up pretty quick.”

Freshman Olivia Ward agreed. “We worked really well together and our efforts during fall ball definitely showed in tonight’s game.”

The team was given multiple opportunities and they did not hesitate to act on them.

Junior captain Alyssa Tachon won the first draw of the game and scored her first goal of the season, assisted by Warner, less than three minutes later.

Less than two minutes later, Tachon netted yet another goal on a free position shot, and then another less than a minute later.

In the 2016 season, Tachon was awarded with NJAC All-Conference honors after being second on the team with 30 goals, 38 ground balls, 45 draw controls and 24 caused turnovers.

Draw control and ground ball control proved to be crucial for Ramapo, as Tachon recorded three more goals during the game. Junior Colleen Manley posted five of her own, while senior Monica Torres, senior Kaite Duca, junior Brianna Himpele and freshman Nicole Jasko each added one.

Maritime repeatedly fouled Ramapo, which did not help their cause, resulting in multiple time-outs for the Privateers and caused turnovers and free position shots for the Roadrunners.

While Maritime would gain four goals of their own in the second half, first-year goalie Taylor Marcialis posted three saves in the game for Ramapo.

“This was a great start to the season and a huge indication of what we can do as a team,” said sophomore defenseman Kate Klingler.

“I’m excited and looking forward to see what the rest of the season has to offer for our team.”

The Roadrunners will be back in action on Wednesday, March 8, when they play at Mount Saint Mary College in a non-conference match-up.
