The Third Annual Trunk-or-Treat hosted by Commuter Affairs and the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life was held this past Friday at the tennis court lots. It was not a typical Halloween atmosphere, as the sun was shining at almost 80 degrees. The event featured different clubs, organizations and offices around campus who decorated the trunks of their cars. Children from Mahwah and Ramsey elementary schools were invited to trick-or-treat from trunk to trunk.
Excitement was growing as students arrived at 2 p.m. to set up their trunks. Each group put the final touches on their trunk, patiently waiting for the kids to arrive. When it came to be 3 o’clock, anticipation for the first trick-or-treaters only increased. By 3:30, the parking lot was filled with young superheroes, skeletons and cowgirls running from car to car for candy.
“My favorite part of the day was when the D.J. played ‘Ghostbusters’ as a little boy dressed as a Ghostbuster arrived,” said Lauren Belsky, senior. “It was just the perfect moment.”
With 36 decorated trunks, local elementary school students, along with faculty and staff children, were given a festive start to their Halloween weekend. Each trunk had its own theme in which the members coordinated their costumes as well as gave out candy and prizes along with some interactive games.
There were two winners for best-decorated trunk, one Greek affiliated and one non-Greek. The winner for the best Greek trunk was Sigma Delta Tau. They used the film “Up” as inspiration, creating a cardboard house in the bed of a truck with balloons on top. The non-Greek winner was the Biochemistry Club. Transforming their car into a lab, the members of the club performed experiments with the trick or treaters. Each trunk’s club received $150 added to their annual budget as a prize.
In addition to the winners, Commuter Affairs had a J. Lee’s inspired popcorn trunk and games for kids to play. They also set up a photo booth for students to snap some fun and festive pictures, and also held a guess the number of candy corn contest. With 364 candy corn in the jar, Sarah Carew, senior, was the closest with a guess of 371 candy corn, claiming the jar as her prize.
Other notable trunks were College Programming Board’s winter wonderland, Office of the President’s pirate theme, Rho Alpha Sigma’s “Finding Nemo” theme and Future Teachers of America’s hayride. All the participants put in great work providing kids and students a fun trick-or-treating experience.
“My favorite part of Trunk or Treat was getting to see my professor’s children all dressed up and running around to each cart to get candy,” said sophomore Kaci Kopec.
“They were amazed by the themes of each car and the costumes of the students and staff.”
The event overall seemed to be a huge success. Many people were impressed by the costumes and trunks that the participants were able to put together and thankful for some fun early trick-or-treating.
