A Ramapo College student was struck by a car driven by College President Peter Mercer on Friday and suffered minor injuries as a result.
Student Kevin Murphy, 20, was in the crosswalk at the intersection of Magnolia Road and Ramapo Valley Road when he was hit by the car, an Audi Q5, according to NorthJersey.com
Murphy was wearing headphones at the time and was struck several feet from the curb. Sun glare played a role in the accident, according to reporting by NorthJersey.com.
No summonses were issued.
The College provided the Ramapo News with a statement regarding the accident:
“A Ramapo College student was struck by a car Friday afternoon at 3:59 p.m. and taken to Valley Hospital to be examined for a possible leg injury. He was released from the hospital later that evening. The car was driven by our College President, Dr. Peter Mercer. No summonses were issued by the Mahwah Police Department. College officials have reached out to the student to offer any assistance.
Dr. Mercer said he was ‘relieved to hear that the student was treated and released from the hospital. I am glad he was not seriously injured.'
The incident happened outside the College’s main gate about a block from the president’s residence. Dr. Mercer immediately attended to the student and asked a witness to call the Mahwah Police who responded promptly.”
