The Ramapo Culture Club held its annual end of the semester party last Monday, inviting students and faculty to eat and explore a collection of cultural artifacts in Friends Hall. Club president and senior Andrew Herrera hosted the event, which curated its exhibit to reflect the College's celebration of the 2017-2018 academic year as the "Year of Europe."
Flamenco music played in the background as attendees sampled European dishes while examining curios, masks and consumer products from Italy, Austria, Spain and other countries. Herrera credited the diversity of the artifacts on display to the club's faculty advisor, associate professor of Spanish Niza Fabre, who formed the club in 1993. Herrera first met Fabre through an elective he took his freshman year at Ramapo; she invited Herrera to attend a meeting of the Culture Club and he has been an active member ever since.
"Students leave things," Fabre said, explaining the eclectic nature of the artifact collection. Items are donated by members of the club upon return from abroad, or by faculty members retiring from Ramapo. "We collect them and store them. The entire collection spans Africa, Asia, all over.The display changes each year."
