CPB hosted a Cartoons and Coloring event in Friends Hall for residents on Friday, March 30. Although the numbers weren’t as high as they could have been due to the Easter weekend, the event was extremely calming and nostalgic for those in attendance.

“This weekend we did Cartoons and Coloring. Something more laid back because this is a weekend many of people do go away,” said Nadia Conway, freshman CPB representative. Although not many students were in attendance, one group at the event ended up having a wonderful time.

“The event as a whole was a nice idea. Cartoons & coloring, basically like reminiscing with our childhood activities. It’s a shame there wasn’t a big turnout due to Easter weekend,” said senior Royal Thomas. He attended with a few friends and enjoyed the conversations he was able to have, fondly referring to the event as a trip down memory lane.

Upon entering Friends Hall, students were greeted with a variety of different coloring pages that they could choose from, while the “Phineas and Ferb” theme song played in the background. The worksheets included elaborate designs of different animals, like cats and dogs dressed up as hipsters and different words with floral patterns around them.

“One of them I made said ‘breathe’ and I think it's going to help me calm myself down when I need to,” said Tamia Anderson, freshman education major, who “put different soothing colors like blues, purples, and greens. I’ll look at it and just remember to breathe when I get stressed.”

Other students in the group had different plans for their coloring pages. One student planned to complete his page with a loved one as a means of spending quality time together, while others planned to save theirs and add them to a collection or hang them up in their rooms.

After the group sat down they picked out the color pencils they'd be using and turned towards the projector to see Phineas get questioned about being “a little too young to be a roller coaster engineer.”

This sparked up a conversation about everyone's favorite old school cartoons.

Classic shows like SpongeBob, Scooby Doo, Dexter’s Laboratory and Teen Titans popped up. One student recounted an incident in which she found her 13-year-old brother watching Dora the Explorer and laughter filled the room.

As the first episode came to an end a request for episode four of the classic show was proposed and granted. “Flop Starz” came on, the episode where Phineas and Ferb become one hit wonders, and before long friends at the table were singing the catchy tune “Gitchi Goo.”

After that episode 25, “Comet Kermilian,” was requested and the whole table started rapping to "S.I.M.P (Squirrels In My Pants)" and became lost in nostalgia. As they were getting ready to leave the event students expressed their interest in seeing more events like this in the future.

“I would [like to see this event again] because I think it was a chill but fun and effective event. A way to relieve stress is always needed on a college campus,” said Jureyah Johnson, sophomore business major.

Another student found herself really enjoying the togetherness that the event fostered. “I feel like everybody tries to do these big events,” said Najah Gilbert, junior business major. “Small events, like everyone getting together and coloring, [helps] bring us all together. To sit there laugh and color.”
