As the lights dimmed, the center stage of Padovano Commons illuminated with bright neon purple and blue lights. Students buzzed with excitement, eager to support their friends and listen to new performers, as they took their seats at the leather couches or tables placed around the commons. A wave of anticipation hushed over the artists lined up to perform as the night began.
This year, Open Mic Night was hosted in Padovano Commons, which is one of the newest additions to the Ramapo College campus. Nestled in between the Spiritual Center and the Birch Tree Inn, Padovano is a calm hangout space to do homework during the week or study with friends. It is a calm getaway, open for students from 3 p.m. to 1 a.m. on weekdays.
Throughout the night, students displayed their many talents as they stepped forward on the stage, strumming their guitars while the melody of their voices flowed together. Other students performed on a keyboard, the melodious sound echoing in the air, the crowd hanging onto every note. The drums added a flare of mellow pop music, spicing up the evening.
The crowd, although small, went wild in support of their fellow Ramapo peers, continuing to cheer loudly and encourage the performers.
Christina Maimone, a freshman who is passionate about singing, recounts her first time performing, she notes, “I think it’s cool that it’s open to everyone, not just music majors.”
Hosted by CPB, Open Mic Night is an ideal place to relax and chill from the stress of college life, while enjoying great music and art. It is also a unique opportunity for students to step out of their comfort zones and gain more confidence as they perform for an audience.
