Valentine’s Day is fast approaching and love (along with snow) is in the air. This celebration of all things love and romance is a good time to find shelter away from the harsh conditions of our — to put it mildly — hectic world. This playlist is perfect for creating Valentine’s Day ambiance and features love songs that highlight the complexity of love, lust and romance.

“Mad About You” – McFly

McFly are a British pop band and their latest album “Young Dumb Thrills” feautures “Mad About You.” This song uses smart wordplay based around the varying meanings of the word “mad” to represent the fine line between being crazy in love and being mad at your partner. The upbeat tone compliments the intelligent lyrics, creating an excellent song.

“invisible string” – Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift’s first folk-style album, “folklore,” shattered records when it came out in the midst of quarantine and features some great love songs. The song ‘invisible string’ chronicles a couples progression as they fall in love and muse on the connections that brought them together.

“All Of Me” – John Legend

John Legend’s love songs are notorious, and “All of Me” from his album “Love in the Future” is no different. Arguably his most popular song, Legend demonstrates his mastery over the piano and killer vocals in this sweet and honest song dedicated to his wife, Chrissy Teigen.

“cotton candy” – YUNGBLUD

YUNGBLUD is a fairly modern face on the alternative rock scene and is known for his outlandish style and switching between genres with ease. His most recent album “weird!” features the single “cotton candy,” which is about sexual liberation and finding that one person you want to keep seeing and remember. It’s a bubblegum-esque pop song, which isn’t too common to see from this British rocker. It will certainly get stuck in your head for the rest of the day after your first listen.

“Your Song” – Elton John

Elton John is one of the most popular singers of the 20th century with his long ranging and impressive discography. He’s written songs about every conceivable topic in extensive career, but “Your Song” is considered by him to be a perfect song. The soft piano and the innocent lyrics perfectly embody young love.

“Baby” (feat. Marina and Luis Fonsi) – Clean Bandit

Clean Bandit, a group known for their electronic music and guest vocal features, collaborated on “Baby” with Marina Diamandis and Louis Fonsi for their second album “What is Love?” The song contains melancholy lyrics about a post-break up scenario and the trouble of letting go of your former love. These deep emotions contrast the peppy dance music it’s paired with. It’s an odd combination, but it fits well.

“Careless Whisper” – George Michael

“Careless Whisper” is another classic song that’s immortalized by many seductive scenes in television and movies in the past few decades. George Michael’s smash hit is featured on his album “Ladies and Gentleman.” The iconic slow beats and woeful reminiscent lyrics about a failed relationship create an intoxicating listening experience.

This playlist will hopefully provide its listeners with a dynamic Valentine’s Day experience, no matter your relationship status or situation. Enjoy at the Spotify link below!
