Business Student Stephen Dormer Passes Away

Stephen Dormer, a transfer business student, passed away on Friday, April 26. He was 25 years old.

Dormer came to Ramapo in the fall of 2011 to study business administration. He transferred from Raritan Valley Community College and was set to earn his bachelor's degree next semester.

Originally of Suffern, N.Y., Dormer lived most of his life in Upper Saddle River. He graduated from Northern Highlands High School in 2006, where he played football. Dormer was a member of the Calvary Lutheran Church in Allendale and was also a Boy Scout for Troop 133.

Professor Murray Sabrin, who taught Dormer in three classes, said he was a "model student."

"Stephen was focused in the classroom," Sabrin said. "He had a good sense of humor; he laughed at my jokes when they were really funny, and not so funny."

Friends and family may attend the visitation, which will be held on Thursday, May 2 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Van Emburg-Sneider-Pernice Funeral Home at 109 Darlington Avenue in Ramsey. A funeral service will be held on at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 3 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Allendale, followed by internment at Redeemer Cemetery in Mahwah.

Dormer's family has requested that in lieu of flowers memorial donations be made to the Ramapo College Foundation c/o the Stephen Dormer Scholarship Fund at 505 Ramapo Valley Road, Mahwah, NJ 07430.

"Stephen undoubtedly will be greatly missed by his family and friends," Sabrin said. "He had a wonderful demeanor, and I was so looking forward to seeing him become another successful Ramapo business school graduate."

Dormer is survived by his parents, Stephen and Eileen, his sister Kaitlyn and his extended family.
