The Golden State Warriors have been the talk of the town throughout this NBA season. From broken records to the amazing shooting from Stephen Curry, the Warriors have simply been unstoppable. They won 73 games in the regular season, beating the single-season wins record with their win against the Memphis Grizzlies, 125-104. This was a record previously held for 20 years by Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls.
“I want to congratulate the Warriors on their amazing season,” Jordan said in a statement. “The game of basketball is always evolving and records are made to be broken. The Warriors have been a lot of fun to watch and I look forward to seeing what they do in the playoffs.”
Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, who was on the 1995-96 Bulls, was elated at the fact that his team was so successful in their season.
“It’s a great way to finish off what was an amazing regular season,” Kerr said. “I just told our guys I never in a million years would have guessed that that record would ever be broken. I thought it was like [Joe] DiMaggio’s [56 game] hit streak, really. I was wrong, but I will say the same thing now that I said 20 years ago, ‘I don’t think this one will ever be broken.’ Somebody’s got to go 74-8. I don’t see it, and I hope our fans aren’t expecting that next year.”
The Warriors have been as close to flawless as any NBA team has ever been and they continued to show this perfection as they blew past the Rockets in Game 1 of the first round of the playoffs, 104-78.
Unfortunately for the Warriors, their star player Curry injured his ankle during Game 1 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals against the Rockets. Curry missed Game 2 of the series. Curry’s status for Game 3 is in question.
“When Steph’s out, our guys understand that he’s not there to count on, so they have to execute. If they don’t, we’re just not going to score enough points,” said Kerr.
Shaun Livingston started in place of Curry on Monday, a game that the Warriors won by a score of 115-106.
Luckily for the Warriors, they have a bench that is able to contribute to their team’s success.
“We’ve got a lot of guys who can play. I think Steph missed three or four games this year. We did fine. Obviously we’ve got to find different ways to score. We’ll prepare for that and see what happens,” said Kerr.
The Warriors are the fan favorite to win this year’s NBA title, and with a healthy Curry, it is no surprise that they won a record 73 games and are the frontrunners to win it all.
