Ramapo’s annual Pink Tie Formal funds cancer research

The American Cancer Society at Ramapo College (ACS) hosted its annual Pink Tie Formal on Oct. 17 as a continuing tradition to honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Much like it has been in the past, this event was educational but also full of fun activities to bring together the Ramapo community. A lot of students showed up in their formal attire, ready to raise awareness and spend time with friends. The dress code for the event was optional, but most attendees came in dresses and heels.

“We do this annually and it’s just a chance to get people to have fun and just bring awareness to breast cancer and I think we did that,” said Jenna Falkenheim, public relations chair for ACS.

The event was overall a success with ACS raising $520. The proceeds will be donated toward their Relay for Life event in the spring semester.

Creating a smaller, more close-knit atmosphere, the event featured different activities hosted by several campus organizations, such as Alpha Phi Omega, A Moment of Magic and Phi Alpha Delta. These activities included card-making for breast cancer survivors, bra pong, ribbon-making and a Polaroid photo booth.

After completing each activity, attendees were given a ticket to enter a raffle for prizes, which included Ramapo merch, a pink-themed basket, a JBL speaker, a pink Owala water bottle and “Your Magic,” a book gifted by A Moment of Magic.

“I loved it. I had such a great time. I think it is such a beautiful cause and I would always support it,” said junior Isabel Restrepo.

There was a DJ and food from two restaurants: Dominoes and Jun Lung. As a new addition to the food offerings, there was a special ShopRite chocolate sheet cake to add a little something sweet for the night.

“There was such good energy tonight and people are out to support such an amazing cause. I am really excited by everyone that came and had a great time,” said Jasmine Jones, vice president of the ACS.

The entrance fee for the event was $5, a small price to pay as a donation to the cause. The event was overall a success with ACS raising $520. The proceeds will be donated toward their Relay for Life event in the spring semester. However, the Pink Tie Formal is just one of many events that the club has planned for this year.

“We look forward to doing [the Pink Tie Formal] every single year. It’s kind of like our start off to the entire year and kind of set us up for Relay and everything else we have going on,” Jones said.
