Men’s volleyball ends season after ECAC matches

Over the past two weeks, Ramapo’s men’s volleyball team has competed in the Skyline Men’s Volleyball Tournament and the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament. The Roadrunners collected one win in each tournament and finished the season with a 19-12 overall record.

Men’s volleyball competed in the first round of the Skyline Men’s Volleyball Tournament on April 9. In the No. 3 spot, the Roadrunners took a 3-0 victory against No. 6 Manhattanville University. This win bumped Ramapo to 18-10 overall and moved Manhattanville down to 13-17 overall.

Ramapo senior Reece Kirchofer helped lead the team to victory with 14 kills and added three blocks and an assist. Freshmen Amari Menter recorded eight kills along with four aces and four digs. Teammate and fellow freshman Nick Lisi also collected eight kills during the game. 

Freshman Jon Zawada contributed 11 digs while junior team captain JoJo Meyer completed 34 assists and 15 digs on top of six attempts and three kills. Overall, Ramapo hit .326 throughout the match.

The Roadrunners’ first round victory meant they’d go on to compete against New Jersey City University (NJCU) in the Skyline semifinals on April 11. The game against NJCU resulted in a loss with a score of 3-0 in the Gothic Knights favor.

Menter made eight kills alongside Kirchofer, who additionally made two aces, seven digs and a block. Fellow Roadrunner Lisi stacked a total of ten kills during the match. Meyer helped the team with 29 assists. Ramapo hit .104 overall. 

Despite the loss, Ramapo went on to take a 3-1 victory in the first round of the ECAC Tournament as the No. 4 seed against Purchase College last Wednesday. 

This brought Ramapo to an overall record of 19-11 on the season and left the Purchase Panthers with a 17-15 overall record on the year. The Roadrunners hit .250 over the course of the match.

Leading the victory for the Roadrunners was Kirchofer with 20 kills and 13 digs, earning the team 20 points. 

Following Kirchofer was Lisi with 18 kills and seven digs. Freshman Caleb Ford executed seven kills and four blocks while Menter contributed eight kills and ten digs. 

On Saturday, the Roadrunners went up against NJCU for a second time in Newark as their second game in the ECAC Tournament where the No. 1 school took a 3-0 victory over Ramapo. The Roadrunners hit .048 during the game.

The Roadrunners were once again led by Kirchofer, who secured 12 kills and contributed one block and three digs. Senior Brendan Edwards executed five kills and three aces. Menter posted five kills and two digs with teammate Meyer contributing with four digs, an ace and 24 assists. 

The game ended the season for the Roadrunners with NJCU going on to compete in the ECAC Championship match. Ramapo ended the season with 19-12 overall standing and a 14-4 overall standing in conferences. The Roadrunners will take to the court again next spring.
