Women’s soccer team striving for a better season

The women’s soccer team lost 1-0 to Rutgers-Camden this past Friday in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) season opener, continuing their losing streak. The Roadrunners are now 2-6-1 overall for the season and 0-2 in the conference.

The Roadrunners started off dominating in the first half, but soon fell behind when the Raptor’s Asia Horne, assisted by Brianne Reeves, kicked a long shot off the crossbar and into the goal. With the score now 1-0, both teams continued to fight until the end of the half. The Roadrunners attempted three shots on goal before the second half.

No goals were scored by either team in the second half, securing the win for the Scarlet Raptors. Ramapo produced one shot on goal, unable to keep up with Rutgers’ seven shots throughout the period. Ramapo goalie Gabby Matias made two saves against the Raptors during the last 45 minutes of the game.

During the 79th minute of the game, senior Emily Dustman had the chance to tie the game with a last-minute header, but the shot was unfortunately saved by Rutgers goalie Michaela Graham. Ines Turner and Morgan Korinchak also had outstanding performances during the game, both delivering shots on goal in the first half.

Head coach Abby Shiffler holds a very positive attitude despite the loss.

“I thought we played one of our best games against Camden. We played with a lot of heart and tenacity. I thought our back line in particular, was very strong,” Shiffler told The Ramapo News.

When asked about how her team will perform for their game against William Paterson, she said, “I feel confident that if we can build on this performance and get a few more players involved in the attack, we’ll find more success. We just need to build upon what we did Friday and get better every game.”

The women’s soccer team played William Paterson on Wednesday, losing 2-0, extending their four-game losing streak. The team will face off against Kean University on Saturday, Oct. 5.
