The romantic comedy world of movies and shows has been lacking for a while. Nothing ever seems to measure up to the love stories that we grew up on — until now. Newly released on Netflix is the television series “Nobody Wants This,” a must-watch show that checks off all the boxes of a good romantic comedy.
With big name actors like Kristen Bell, Sherry Cola, Adam Brody, Timothy Simmons and Michael Hitchcock, this show will have you falling in love with them all over again. The chemistry between all of the actors is notable, whether it’s good or bad, to make the story that much more of an all encompassing show that you will want to binge just to stay inside of the fictional world.
This show is a true story about how the creator of the show met her husband. The plot follows a woman in her late twenties, Joanne (Kristen Bell), who is looking for a stable relationship in her life after a series of failed relationships. The woman and her sister host a sex podcast where she shares failed dating attempts and gives women advice to those going through the same thing.
One night Joanne is set up by a friend at a party to meet a guy who happens to be a rabbi, Noah (Adam Brody). What started out as being friends becomes a bit more complicated when a relationship comes into play. Set with cultural and religious barriers in their way, Noah and Joanne will try to push through the odds to make their relationship work. Will love conquer all or will the barriers be too much for them?
“Nobody Wants This” is one of those shows that you need your full undivided attention for. The plot will grab you right in the first five minutes and you will not notice how much time has passed until you are on the last episode and it is 10 o’clock at night. This show is set at the second spot in Netflix’s top 10 for the second week in a row and it deserves all the hype it has received.
Something that I liked about the show was how relatable it was. From the second you turn it on it talks about how relationships these days are different and how online apps are the usual way people meet others. The show starts out with Joanne coming back from a failed online date experience and her talking about it with her sister, Morgan (Justine Lupe), on the podcast. Like podcasts in real life, women tend to do the same sharing with the world about how their dates went and if the experience was worth it or not.
Another thing that I liked was the main scene where the couple comes together and finally drops the whole “just friends” act. It was such a normal moment that was full of the female gaze and felt as if I was watching a book scene unfold. The chemistry between Joanne and Noah felt as if it was coming off the screen and met all of the first kiss desires that every rom-com looks for.
Although this story of defying odds of different cultures and religions while being in a relationship has been written about before, this show takes a different look at it and makes it its own. Joanne and Noah take the story and make it more relatable to our world today.
While this series has not been renewed for a second season yet, I have no doubt in my mind that it will continue on. The series ends in a way that it can be continued or the viewers can be satisfied with the show stopping ending.
“Nobody Wants This” is the first show in a long time that I have been able to binge watch and still want to rewatch again and again. This story and plot was something that I immediately connected with and wanted to stay inside in order to experience it all over again.
If you are looking for a new rom-com TV series to watch — or binge — then this show is for you. As long as you love some cheesy moments, banter and on-screen chemistry that meets no bounds, you will fall in love with the show just like I did.
