Pop culture costumes are in for Halloween

With last year’s Halloween consisting of Wednesday Addams’ and Barbies, this Halloween will definitely contain pop culture-themed costumes. With the amount of popular movies and music released this year, don’t be surprised to see a bunch of movie characters and pop stars at your Halloween parties and trick-or-treating at your door.

Personally, I have seen a few costumes online already that seem a little absurd, such as a knockoff of a Stanley cup costume being sold at Target. However, the absurdity is part of what makes Halloween costumes fun and creative.

Pop Stars

Following the popularity of The Eras Tour, I think we can expect to see quite a few Taylor Swift costumes this year. The Swift costumes will possibly be from her different “eras” such as “1989” or “Speak Now.” I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s some couples costumes of Swift and her current boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight-end Travis Kelce as well.

The well-known “brat summer” is not quite over yet, especially with Charli XCX releasing her remix album of “brat” last Friday, Oct. 11. We might not only see some Charli XCX costumes, but others that fit the “brat” theme with party outfits or outfits in the shade of “brat” green. There’s even a possibility of seeing many Charli XCX and Troye Sivan matching costumes due to the success of the Sweat tour.

Sabrina Carpenter has also served some iconic looks this year, the looks from her “Please, Please, Please” music video as one example. Her music has also been very popular, with her single “Espresso” hitting number one on Billboard. Whether it’s her heart cutout corsets or her well-known blonde curtain bangs, fans can be seen having a “Short n’ Sweet” time.

Marvel

“Deadpool and Wolverine” was one of the most popular action films of the summer. Both the costumes of Deadpool and Wolverine are pretty gender-neutral, which brings a higher chance of seeing them around.

I think we can see a few Agatha Harknesses as well, since the new Marvel Disney+ series “Agatha All Along” has been pretty popular lately as episodes are still releasing every week.

Other 2024 Films

“Challengers” is another popular film from this year that has been all over social media for the insane chemistry between the actors and their style of clothing. The film stars Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist as professional tennis players competing not only through tennis but for love and friendship. Be on the lookout for groups dressed in tennis gear, Zendaya’s iconic pink zip up or a gray T-shirt that says “I told ya.”

Jenna Ortega has the chance to take over Halloween two years in a row with the popularity of her portrayal of Wednesday Addams taking over last year. With her most recent role in “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” as Astrid Deetz, a lot of young fans might consider dressing up as either her, Lydia Deetz or Beetlejuice himself.

Although “Wicked” does not release until later in November, there could still be some matching Glinda and Elphaba costumes. I think it will be interesting to see people take on Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo’s versions of the characters ahead of the film’s release.

2024 Election

With the election being a hot topic this year, I would not be surprised to see presidential candidate related costumes. Obviously these costumes will not be serious, as people will most likely take a comedic turn on the upcoming election.

Of course there are always the Disney characters or the basic witches and animal costumes. Regardless, Halloween is always a good time for everyone to get together and have a good time.
