‘Lunch and Lead’ addresses the importance of student leadership

The Student Leadership Program here at Ramapo hosted a “Lunch and Lead” session in room D-215 on Thursday, Oct. 31. The goal of the event was for students to discuss ways Ramapo can improve in leadership skills and build their community with their students.

According to Archway, “This fun event will have students suggest future leadership ideas and programs that you would want to see and how you can develop your RCNJ leadership.” Students were able to share feedback and ideas on what future events they would like for Ramapo, such as events involving the local community. The Student Leadership Program is a part of the Center for Student Involvement (CSI) which helps connect students to the center so they can help make the student’s ideas happen.

The event was held by the Coordinator of Student Activities for the Student Leadership Program Jack Nesmith. Nesmith had the ability to keep students engaged by asking important questions to the group such as “What helps you build a community as a Ramapo student?” In addition, Nesmith answered questions from the students who came to the event about various topics revolving around campus leadership and how they can get involved.

Some of the students who attended suggested ideas of CSI co-sponsoring more events with other clubs and to create more programs similar to the Peer-Facilitators. Co-sponsoring events with clubs brings in diverse groups of students to work together and meet.

Through the open conversation, students were able to discover more information about different clubs offered here on campus that they knew of and others they did not. In doing this it helped students become more engaged in the campus communities and be more aware of what is going on around campus.

During the event, students were offered pizzas with toppings and chicken wings with different sauces that served as the “lunch” part of “Lunch and Lead.” Students during the event were encouraged to bring up any ideas that they wanted to see happen in the Ramapo community while being in a more relaxed and open environment.

Events like these are important for CSI to get to know the students’ opinions on what seems right on campus. This is one way to gather students together and make a difference within their environment. Hopefully, we will get to see these student’s interesting ideas come to life sometime in the future.

The Student Leadership Program’s next event, Project L.E.A.D. X-Men Edition will be held on Thursday, Nov. 7 in room A-101 at 1:00 p.m. which will also be hosted by Nesmith. This exciting event will be similar to “Lunch and Lead” but will focus more on group leadership with a Marvel Comics theme.
