Men’s ice hockey team places third in Empire Collegiate Hockey Conference

This past weekend on Nov. 8 and Nov. 9, the men’s ice hockey team suffered two losses at home against Pennsylvania State University at Harrisburg and Massachusetts Maritime Academy. The two games bring the team’s record to 6-9-0 and third place in the Empire Collegiate Hockey Conference.

Last Friday, the Roadrunners lost to the Nittany Lions 2-7 in a disappointing game littered with penalties and insurance goals. Ramapo’s right wing Luca Carnemolla scored the first goal of the game six minutes into the first period with assists from Anthony Fizer and Brian Atwell. Harrisburg responded with a goal by Daniel McConchie with four minutes left in the period.

Each team received three, two-minute penalties in the first period as well. On a power play with two minutes left in the period, Tommy Korpics scored Ramapo’s final goal of the game with assists from Daniel Kulbanskiy and Devin Haines.

There were also three penalties in both the second and third periods given to each team. The Nittany Lions would go on to score five goals in the second period and one in the third, largely monopolizing on power plays to get their sixth and seventh goals of the game. After this win, the Lions moved to 8-6-0 and currently remain first place in the Delaware Valley Collegiate Hockey Conference.

In Ramapo’s game the following day against the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, the Roadrunners fell to the Buccaneers 2-4. The first period remained scoreless with penalties on both teams for roughing and tripping.

Ramapo scored first midway through the second period with a goal from Fizer and an assist from Matthew Cochran. The Buccaneers soon responded with two goals later on in the period scored by Colin Campbell and Constantino Marrocco, respectively. The score remained 1-2 in favor of Massachusetts by the end of the second period.

In the third period, action started to pick up when Fizer scored the game-tying goal within the first five minutes, assisted by Haines. Nine seconds later, Massachusetts responded with a goal from Nick Souretis, assisted by Marrocco.

In an effort to tie the game, Ramapo pulled goalie Alec Rittenhouse from the ice late in the third period to put an extra man up against the Buccaneers. With 43 seconds left, Massachusetts center Charles Hickman, assisted by Aidan Weir, scored the go-ahead goal to secure the Bucs victory.

The Massachusetts Maritime Academy now holds an 8-5-0 record and remains in first place in the New England Independent Hockey Conference.

The Roadrunners will play again on Friday, Nov. 15 against Farmingdale State College at home and on Saturday, Nov. 16 against Neumann University on the road.
