The women’s basketball team at Ramapo commenced their season with two games over the weekend at the Tyler Tip-Off in Northampton, Mass. Ramapo’s first game of the weekend was against Smith College on Friday, Nov. 8. They faced an unfortunate loss with the ending score being 33-95. This was Smith College’s first game and win of the season.
The Roadrunners had a tough start with Smith College scoring 39 points in the first quarter while Ramapo secured 14 points. In the last quarter, Ramapo scored 13 points and Smith College added another 17.
Senior Alison Ahern made the most shots for Ramapo, scoring 11 points with 4 rebounds. Sophomore Lauren Flatt made a great first appearance with 5 points along with 3 high steals. Freshman Angelene Mattingly also stood out with her 7 points and 2 assists.
Smith College’s sophomores Uta Nakamura and Hannah Martin earned 12 points and 14 points respectively, with senior Jane Loo earning 11 points and graduate student Ally Landau scoring 12 points.
Ramapo shot 25% throughout the game from the field, making 11 out of 44 shots. They continued to shoot 30% from the three-point line and 80% from the free throw line.
The Roadrunners second game as part of the Tyler Tip off was held on Saturday, Nov. 9 against Arcadia University. Ramapo suffered from another loss by 31 points as the final score was 40-71. The game happens to also be Arcadia’s first game and win of the season.
Ramapo had another slow start by only scoring 7 points with Arcadia scoring 30 points in the first quarter. However, by the fourth quarter Ramapo was close to matching Arcadia’s score with 17 points, while Arcadia made 21.
Ahern played another fantastic game with 14 points and 10 rebounds. This led her to be named to the All-Tournament Team. This honor comes from, according to the NCHE athletic commission, “each coach [picking] one or more players from his or her team based on their performance(s) at the post-season tournament for their sport.” Junior Brianna Smith also scored 7 points as she made 7 rebounds. Freshman Jocelyn Huancaya earned 5 rebounds and 1 point while Emma Cartwright scored 5 points and 1 rebound.
Arcadia’s new freshman Taylor Koenig scored 17 points with 8 rebounds, while returning junior Delaney Bell earned 10 points and 4 rebounds. Graduate student Scarlett Glasser-Nehls scored 8 points along with 4 rebounds and assists.
Ramapo shot 30% from the field, making 14 out of 46 shots total, and 61% from the free throw line.
Since this weekend was Ramapo’s first two games of the season, their current record is 0-2. The Roadrunner’s next game will be against Manhattanville University in Purchase, N.Y. at 6 p.m.
