A lot has happened in the world over the past week. Let’s catch up on the major news headlines:
Cuba Earthquake
Cuba suffered a massive 6.8 magnitude earthquake on Sunday, Nov. 11. The location of the earthquake is said to be 25 miles south of Bartolome Maso, a municipality in the Granma Province of Cuba.
One civilian of Santiago, Cuba described the disastrous earthquake as “everything was moving, the walls, everything.”
The earthquake comes just after Cuba was hit by Category Three Hurricane Rafael just a few days earlier on Wednesday, Nov. 6. Luckily there were no major damages or injuries from the earthquake reported.
Louisiana Public Schools Law Denied
In Louisiana, a group of parents who have children in public schools came together to block a new law that would allow the Ten Commandments to be involved in the school system and won.
Judge John DeGravelles has stated that this new law is “facially unconstitutional.” This makes sense since public schools are legally not allowed to teach religion. DeGravelles also explained the law clearer to NBC News, saying it would allow “reading and considering a specific version of the Ten Commandments, one posted in every single classroom, for the entire school year, regardless of the age of the student or subject matter of the course” to go down in Louisiana classrooms.
This is not just an issue in Louisiana, as other states such as Oklahoma are facing similar problems. It is still up to question what Oklahoma will rule in favor of.
Disney Cruise Rescue in Bermuda
One of Disney’s Cruise ships, The Disney Treasure, saved four people out of a sinking catamaran in Bermuda while they were initially on their way to Port Canaveral, Florida on Sunday, Nov. 10.
The sinking of the catamaran was reportedly started by “a gasket failure in the escape hatch causing the vessel to begin taking on water.”
According to U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Mike Rauch, “They were really way out there to sea and they were in distress, and they were having some trouble trying to keep the water from coming in.”
The group that was rescued included four people who happened to all be family members between the ages of 25 – 74. The group included a married couple, their daughter and a cousin.
After the rescue, the family was taken aboard the cruise ship on its way to Florida. The family members were not hurt.
India Hospital Fire
A sudden fire tragically took place at Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College Hospital in northern India late Friday night with ten newborns dead. About 44 newborns were rescued by the hospital staff, with 16 left in critical condition.
The blaze on Friday night at the hospital is being blamed on an electrical fault. Local officials believe an electrical short circuit or another fault in a machine used to increase the level of oxygen in the ward caused the fire.
The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has since released a heartfelt message, stating “My deepest condolences to those who have lost their innocent children in this. I pray to God to give them the strength to bear this immense loss.”
This is the second hospital fire India has suffered from this year. The first one took place in New Delhi with six babies sadly passing away.
Russia Drone Attack on Ukraine
Russia launched a huge drone attack at a nine-story building in northern Ukraine on Sunday, Nov. 17. The attack on the building in Sumy has killed eight people along with leaving dozens of citizens injured. Two of these deaths happened to have unfortunately been children.
Some of the missiles launched include “Iranian-made Shaheds, as well as cruise, ballistic and aircraft-launched ballistic missiles.” Ukraine was able to shoot down about 144 of these 210 air targets from Russia.
