Women’s basketball secures 59-37 win

The Ramapo College Women’s Basketball team claimed their first victory at Medgar Evers College against the Cougars on Nov. 23. The score ended in Ramapo’s favor 59-37, moving the Roadrunners to 1-5 overall and the Cougars 0-4 overall.

The Roadrunners dominated from the beginning with a score of 18-5 heading into the second quarter. Then each team scored 11 points in the second and third quarters, while the final quarter brought Ramapo 19 points versus the Cougars’ 10, finalizing their victory. 

Freshman Damiya Graham led the Roadrunners in this game with a collection of 15 points, four steals, four rebounds and three assists. Senior Alison Ahern followed with 12 points, nine rebounds and two assists. Freshman Jocelyn Huancaya landed nine points, eight rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal, while sophomore Lauren Flatt brought seven points, seven rebounds and a block. Finally, junior Bailey Murrell scored seven rebounds, five assists and four points. 

The Roadrunners also shot 33% from the field, 23% from the three-point line and 57% from the free-throw line. 

Following this game, the Roadrunners traveled to face New Jersey City University (NJCU) on Nov. 26 with a loss of 55-42. The NJCU Gothic Knights moved to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the NJAC while the Roadrunners stand at 1-6 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

The Roadrunners started off strong with Ahern giving Ramapo an 18-15 lead from a jumper in the second quarter as well as seven additional points, and Murrell bringing an additional two points. Then, an NJCU free throw by Graham and a basket by Ahern furthered the lead 21-17 with less than 3:30 on the clock. After scoring three points, the Roadrunners went to the locker room with a 23-20 lead. 

Heading into the final quarter, NJCU gained the lead 33-28. Soon after, at the start of the fourth quarter, they increased the lead to 40-28 during a 7-0 run. Flatt interrupted the run with a jumper that brought the score up 42-30 with 7:35 on the clock. Murrell also started a 6-0 run with 5:34 on the clock, leading NJCU to call a timeout. 

NJCU sophomore Kendra Rigo scored back-to-back baskets before Ahern brought a layup for the Roadrunners, bringing the score to 38-46 in favor of NJCU. Then NJCU junior Elyssa Russo sank a jumper while Ahern scored her 17th point of the game on a basket, turning the score 40-48 with 1:21 remaining.

With 1:05 on the clock, NJCU went to the free throw line and brought the lead 49-40. NJCU sophomore Autumn John landed back-to-back baskets for a 53-40 lead and Graham converted a pair of free throws before sophomore Luisa Montalvo scored the final basket, finalizing a 55-42 NJCU win. 

Ahern led the Roadrunners in this game with a new season high of 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Graham followed with seven points. Flatt posted her own new career high of 13 rebounds and brought six points. The team shot 34% from the field and 38% from the free-throw line.

The Roadrunners will be back on the court on Dec. 7 as they face Rutgers-Camden in an away NJAC game.
