The Ramapo College ice hockey club team has remained red hot, winning their ninth game in a row to open up the 2016-17 season. Despite being outshot 36-21, they defeated Quinnipiac with a score of 2-0, their first shutout of the season.

The team has already surpassed their eight total wins from the previous season.

With new head coach Bob Smith at the helm, the Roadrunners sit at the top of the ACHA Division III Atlantic Division. They are also tied for fifth in the nation among ACHA Division III teams with their perfect 9-0 record.

The perfect record so far is “unexpected,” Smith admitted, but he knows he inherited a good group of players.

Amongst his players includes freshman forward Dan Demarco, who opened up the scoreboard just 2:30 into the game. It was Demarco’s eighth goal of the season.

The Roadrunners were outshot 12-6 in the first period despite holding the 1-0 lead.

The Roadrunners struggled early on, going on a 5-on-3 penalty kill just 51 seconds into the first period. However, after a successful kill, sophomore defenseman Keith Henning found the back of the net on a slap shot from the point to give the Roadrunners a 2-0 lead.

Shots were still in favor of Quinnipiac, 16-7 into the period and 28-13 overall.

With his first shutout of the year, junior goalie Keith Gay had his goals against average fall to 2.10. He has let up just five goals in his last five games.

The Roadrunners will be back in action on Friday when they take on Hofstra University. The puck drops at 8:30 p.m. at Sport-O-Rama in Monsey, New York.
