The Ramapo College women’s soccer team played their first NJAC game of the season this past Saturday, Sept. 21. RCNJ tied New Jersey City University, 1-1, after two scoreless overtime periods to end in a draw. Ramapo’s overall record now stands at 4-2-1 while their conference record begins at 0-0-1.

The Roadrunners came out hot in the first half of gameplay. Forward players like senior Kaelyn Angelucci and sophomore Lauren Vladyka were able to secure possession and take the first two shots of the game early within the first three minutes of kickoff.

Ramapo got on board first thanks to freshman Carla Goodwin who put out her third goal of the season, and the first of the game 18 minutes in with an assist by junior Amanda Gouldsbury. For the remainder of the first half, goals by both sides were attempted but not collected, including a header shot by RCNJ’s junior Kaitlyn Kelly that flew wide off a corner kick from Vladyka at the 30 minute mark.

The Roadrunners outshot the Gothic Knights 10-3 for the first half and proceeding halftime, RCNJ returned to the field holding onto their momentum from the first half.  The team continued firing shots, and had three opportunities in the second half before NJCU stole a goal at 59:03 to tie it up 1-1.

From there, intensity definitely picked up: the Roadrunners were given two yellow cards and one red within the next five minutes. NJCU received a yellow card as well. The remainder of the half was played out scoreless by both sides which meant the teams were headed into overtime.

The Roadrunners led in attempted shots again in the second half, 7-6.

Each overtime period lasted ten minutes. In the first, RCNJ received a corner kick at 92:12 but were not able to lock in another goal. This was the only period where the Roadrunners did not lead in shot attempts, only recording one to NJCU’s two.

The second round of overtime was quite exciting, and definitely a win for RCNJ being that they held possession of the ball nearly the entire time.  The offense put out another five shots on goal and received three corner kicks, not letting the Gothic Knights even take one shot.

The final score stood at 1-1 for the game. The Roadrunners ended on top in shots 23-11 and in shots on goal, 10-6.

Ramapo also received a total of eight corner kicks, while New Jersey City was only rewarded one.

Goalkeeper Elizabeth Harvell played a full 110 minute game and contributed five saves in the net for RCNJ.

Aside from the goal tallied by Goodwin off an assist by Gouldsbury in the first half, the team leaders were junior Ciara Brophy and sophomore Cammi Plage.  Each Roadrunner tallied 4 attempted shots, two of which were shots on goal. Right behind them was senior team captain Liliann Vizcaino with three attempts, one of which was a shot on goal.  A variety of other players dished out shots including Angelucci, Kelly, and Vladyka, all with two apiece.

RCNJ’s women’s soccer team will take the field again on Wednesday Sept. 25, when they host Western Connecticut State in some non-conference action. Kickoff is at 4:30 p.m. at the Athletic Center on campus.
