The Ramapo College women’s soccer team celebrated Senior Day on Saturday, Oct. 19, when they hosted Rutgers University-Camden for an NJAC tournament game. The Roadrunners fell to the Scarlet Raptors, 3-1, making their overall record 4-8-1 and 0-5-1 in the conference.
The Ramapo team honored three seniors on Saturday: goalkeeper Elizabeth Harvell, captain Liliann Vizcaino, and forward Kaelyn Angelucci. All three players have been starters since their freshman year.
The Roadrunners were first to be seen on the scoreboard near the 34th minute of the game (33:55). The goal was scored by sophomore forward Lauren Vladyka, her fifth recorded goal of the season, on a high shot flying over the goalkeeper’s head, off of a pass from junior Kaitlyn Kelly. The score remained 1-0 for the rest of the half as the teams headed into halftime.
Ramapo held the advantage in shots for the first half, posting five while Rutgers-Camden only attempted one.
The second half proved to be tougher for the Roadrunners; the Scarlet Raptors tied the game 1-1 with a stolen goal just 58 seconds after the whistle blew. Within the next three minutes, Rutgers-Camden capitalized and collected two additional goals, which would go unanswered for the rest of the game.
The final score still stood at 3-1 by the time the clock hit 90 minutes.
Rutgers-Camden ended up leading in shots for the game, 15-8, putting out ten while Ramapo tallied only four. Corner kicks also went to Rutgers-Camden, as they were awarded four to Ramapo’s three for both halves. The Roadrunners received 11 fouls while the Scarlet Raptors were given eight.
All three seniors being celebrated started and played most of the game. Goalkeeper Elizabeth Harvell was the only one of the three who played a full 90-minute game. She recorded seven saves in the net.
Captain Vizcaino put out a shot on goal early in the second half (46:44), saved by the Scarlet-Raptor keeper. She also took a penalty corner in the first second of the game.
Angelucci dished out a penalty corner kick at 28:42.
Sophomore Vladyka played a great personal game, collecting four shots and two on goal shots, while also recording the only RCNJ goal of the game.
Sophomore midfielder Sarah Tomasello tallied the remaining shot on goal for Ramapo at the very end of the first half, 42:08.
Although a tough loss, things are looking up for the Roadrunners. Ramapo College women’s soccer team played again on Monday, Oct. 21 to a 1-1 draw against Rutgers-Newark. During this double-overtime conference game, Elizabeth Harvell became the Ramapo College Women’s Soccer All-Time Saves leader. She broke the record with her tenth save of the match and now has 348 career saves. For the game, Harvell tallied 11 saves in total.
The women’s soccer team’s next game is a non-conference match-up against Lehman College this Wednesday, Oct. 23. The Roadrunners will travel to the Bronx borough to play this early evening game at 5 p.m.
