The 2020 Billboard Music Awards was full of inspiration

Starting in 1990, the Billboard Music Awards have always been one of the most successful and exciting awards shows in history. Like the MTV Video Music Awards back in September, a global pandemic could not stop the show from going on and give artists a platform to showcase their music. From many fantastic performances by artists such as Doja Cat and BTS, the 2020 Billboard Music Awards was a hit, even with social distancing guidelines.

The show initially planned to be in late April at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. However, because of the rapid spreading of COVID-19, Billboard was forced to reschedule. To ensure the crew and music artists’ safety and well-being, Billboard stated on Aug. 14 that the show would take place on Oct.14 with Kelly Clarkson. Instead of the show taking place in Las Vegas, it was held at the Dolby Theatre in sunny Los Angeles, CA. Despite the lack of an audience, artists like Post Malone, Brandy, Bad Bunny and more continued to bring the house down with outstanding performances.

The award show was available to fans who could tune in to see their favorite artists throughout the night, even if they could not be there physically. The artists were only allowed to appear in-person if they were accepting an award nomination, presenting, or performing. Due to the lack of an audience, the entire venue's space was utilized. Schedules were also made to protect those in attendance. Billboard made sure to check the temperature of those entering the building, fill out a symptom survey and required those to show their COVID-19 test results as an extra precaution.

Of course, the biggest winners were not surprising. Post Malone managed to win eight awards for categories such as Top Artist, Top Rap Album, Top 100 Artist, and more. BTS gave an exciting performance of their hit song, “Dynamite,” and grabbed an award for Top Social Artist. Harry Styles also had received the Billboard Chart Achievement award for his hit single, “Watermelon Sugar,” off of his “Fine Line” album debuting in December of 2019.

Additional memorable moments from the show were some of the incredible live performances. One of the most anticipated performances was from Doja Cat, where she performed a medley of her hit songs “Say So,” “Juicy” and “Like That.” Fans were amazed at her talented dancing skills and unique vocals. Another powerful moment was Lizzo’s acceptance speech for winning Top Sales Artist. She spoke about refusing to be suppressed and inspired others to refuse to be suppressed.

“Let me tell you all something — when people try to suppress something, it’s normally because that thing holds power. They’re afraid of your power,” the pop singer shared in her “VOTE” printed dress. “There’s power in who you are. There’s power in your voice. So whether it’s through music, protest, or your right to vote, use your power, use your voice, and refuse to be suppressed.”

The event was an overall success and provided viewers with plenty to admire. Whether it be the fashion, award sweeps, political urgency and/or awesome tunes, the night is one we will all remember.

Even with the pandemic still here and cases starting to climb again, music has the beautiful power of helping us come together and putting us at temporary ease. The 2020 Billboard Music Awards did just that last week and will continue to do so for years to come.
