The Student Government Association’s College Advocates Supporting Higher Education (CA$H) Committee raises awareness about higher education issues that directly impact us all, especially those issues that affect our tuition. Every other week, we’ll discuss a different issue facing higher education.
In this issue, we’ll answer the question facing many college-aged students: why should we vote? Students need to vote to ensure their voices are heard. This may sound cliché, but it’s true. The best way to voice your opinion in our representative democracy is through voting for politicians that agree with your perspective, and articulating your beliefs to those elected officials.
There are practical reasons to show up to vote, too. After each election, pollsters collect data regarding the demographics of those voting. This informs elected officials of who is coming out to vote and whom they need to appease to be re-elected. As students of Ramapo College, a college that receives funding from the state, many major decisions made at the state level by these aforementioned legislators have a direct impact on us. Therefore, regardless of your position on the issue, it is vital that we as students are educated, make informed decisions in these debates and most importantly, vote!
If you are not registered to vote, the CA$H Committee is registering students to vote in the upcoming elections on Nov. 4. Stop by the second floor of the Student Center for a few minutes on Tuesday, Oct. 7 from 1 to 2 p.m. to register using TurboVote! Also, please attend the CA$H Committee meetings on Tuesdays at 9:20 p.m. in SC223.
