The Multicultural Center here at Ramapo College hosted a painting and empanadas event, “Carry your Culture,” on Sept. 19. The event offered a space for students to come together to meet each other, enjoy great empanadas and paint tote bags with flags, colors and designs representing their ethnicities.
During the event students were asked to share their own experiences within their cultures and it became a small tabletop conversation about the students’ different cultures. Students were also offered empanadas to eat while painting and talking with their peers. Toward the end of the event, students participated in a final discussion of what their culture means to them and how it affects them in their daily lives.
A Ramapo freshman who attended the event, Agnese Karen, enjoyed the event and said, “Just to be around different people and learn about each other’s cultures is great.”
The “Carry Your Culture” event was a way for students to express themselves and be proud of their individual identities while also connecting with those with different identities. It also helped celebrate diversity, educate each other in cultural competency, make new connections and, of course, paint tote bags.
The Multicultural Center is available to everyone on campus to connect with and learn from fellow peers to create more of a diverse community here on campus. For more information on the Multicultural Center, email them at diversity@ramapo.edu.
