Sabrina Carpenter’s ‘Short n’ Sweet’ tour sweetens audiences

“Please, Please, Please” tell me you’ve seen the “Short n’ Sweet” show! No? Well, you have come to the right place to get a little “Taste.” On Sept. 23, pop sensation Sabrina Carpenter took on her first headlining arena tour named after her popular sixth studio album, “Short n’ Sweet.”

This tour clearly reflects Carpenter’s well-known witty remarks in her lyrics. Plus, those who are in love with theater would have a blast deep diving into the easter eggs of this concert. As a fellow theater kid, we know how to put on a good show! Thanks to Carpenter’s fans there is plenty of footage that I was able to dissect from night one.

The opening has been said to be one of the best concert introductions seen in a while. A massive video screen projects Carpenter relaxing in a bubble bath with a narrator asking the popstar if she is ready for her show. This catches the singer by surprise as she is clearly still in the bath. Despite this, the narrating voice then tries to introduce Carpenter onto the stage but she is nowhere to be found. Not giving up, the narrator voice re-introduces Carpenter where she eventually comes out in a bedazzled towel. That was totally meant to happen … I think.

Carpenter knows how to add a comical touch to all of her performances, even her music videos. Many critics have been comparing the comedic qualities of the show to the famous sitcom, “I Love Lucy,” not only because of the 1950s aesthetic seen throughout the tour, but because of the clumsy yet charming qualities Lucille Ball was known for that Carpenter portrays.

To keep up this old Hollywood theme, there are fashionable touches to the performances as well. From Carpenter’s iconic blonde pin-up curls, all the way to each backup dancer wearing a pastel, vintage nightgown.

That’s not all folks! The props on the stage even matched the aesthetic, including a completely decorated vanity, a red heart-shaped stage and a circular bed which is a nod to the pop star’s song, “Bed Chem.”

The entire stage direction needs to win an award, as I feel we are watching a glamorous episode of a sitcom in real life. Near the end of the night, there is a small game of spin the bottle that all of Carpenter’s fans can look forward to every concert. No, this game isn’t meant to be played with your crush, but is used to choose a surprise cover song!

So far, the songs the bottle has chosen include ABBA’s “Mamma Mia,” Shania Twain’s “That Don’t Impress Me Much” and “Kiss Me” by Sixpence None the Richer. As the tour continues, fans are wondering what surprise songs Carpenter may reveal next.

After only two nights, the “Short n’ Sweet” tour seems to be living up to its name. No worries if you did not get to see the show yet, as Carpenter will be performing until late March of next year. I’ll try not to spoil it all for you and I hope we can stay in “Good Graces.”
