Eastern University Field Hockey defeated Ramapo on Wednesday, Oct. 2 in a 2-0 win. The Roadrunners now hold a 2-8 overall record for their season.
In the non-conference game, both teams dominated, taking control of the field whenever possible. The Roadrunners outshot the Eagles 16-13, while also delivering 11 shots on cage. Just two minutes into the game, forward Morgan Trotter sent a shot towards the Eagle’s cage, but was blocked by Angelina Catania, goalkeeper for Eastern University. Trotter would go on to deliver three more shots on cage throughout the duration of the game, leading her team in this area.
Despite the offensive force of the Roadrunners on that late Wednesday night, no player on both teams was able to change the score during the first and second quarters of the match. The third quarter brought trouble when Abby Hakes, forward for the Eagles, scored the first goal after a penalty corner, just seven minutes into the second half. Midfielder Kara Frantz came in with the assist, the Roadrunners trailing 1-0.
The trouble for Ramapo continued when, less than two minutes after the first goal, forward Karlee Howard rebounded off of a save from Roadrunners’ goalkeeper Michelle Kukan and hit the ball straight back into the cage. Kukan fought off the Eagles with five previous saves on goal, but was unable to stop the rebound. Howard’s fifth goal of the season extended the lead to 2-0.
In the first-ever game between the two programs, the Eagles dominated defensively over Ramapo despite their strong offensive moves throughout the game. Eastern University took advantage of their eight penalty corners throughout the match and made game-altering decisions from those shots.
The Roadrunners fought hard during their feisty match, and will pick back up on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2024 against Rowan University for their eleventh game of the season. The non-conference game will be played in Glassboro, N.J. and broadcasted on YouTube.
