National Sports Roundup: What you missed week of Oct. 3

Derek Carr injured

Derek Carr, quarterback for the New Orleans Saints, tore his oblique in Monday night’s game against the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media. The Saints have not released how long Carr will be out with the injury and will avoid putting him on injury reserve.

Carr maintained that he did not exit the Chiefs game early due to pain, but rather his ability to move and ball. He told reporters, “It wasn’t like dealing with pain … I just can’t do what I want to do.” An additional MRI confirmed the oblique tear after Monday’s game.

Spencer Rattler, rookie for the Saints, will start on Sunday in Carr’s place. Head coach of the Saints Dennis Allen chose Rattler over Jake Haener, the co-second-string quarterback for the Saints alongside Rattler. Allen stated that the starting quarterback for each game will be a week-by-week decision. Allen told NBC, “[T]his would be the right time for Spencer to get his opportunity.”

Kraken pay tribute to Gaudreau brothers

Tuesday night, Seattle paid tribute to John and Matthew Gaudreau before their season opener. The two young hockey players passed away in late August after being struck by a drunk driver while biking in Carneys Point, New Jersey. John was 31 and Matthew was 29.

ESPN aired a touching tribute to the two young men who were honored before the game. The video depicted the successful careers of former Blue Jackets player John and former New York Islander Matthew. The Blue Jackets will commemorate John and Matthew’s memory with special decals on their helmets which will be worn throughout the season.

Season Monahan, former teammate on the Calgary Flames, spoke in the video. Monahan said in the tribute, “I think he made people around him better people. The way he was with his kids, the way he is with his wife. He is going to be with me every step of the way.”

Jessica Campbell first woman to coach in NHL

Jessica Campbell became the first woman to coach in the NHL last Tuesday night in her debut as the assistant coach for the Seattle Kraken. Campbell received a warm welcome from fans at Climate Pledge Arena in the Kraken’s season opener against the St. Louis Blues. She was named assistant coach by Dan Bylsma, head coach for the Kraken.

Campbell felt a little nervous during her opening game as an assistant coach, comparing her coaching to riding a bike. When asked about her future with the Kraken, she told NHL.com, “The year ahead is going to be a lot of fun. But to know and to understand that obviously there’s still at the forefront the thoughts of other women and other people who have the same aspirations as I do, so, to carry that torch every day and keep my focus on being a coach, but it definitely puts meaning into the work.”

Campbell also made history in the minor leagues, being the first woman to coach in the AHL under the Coachella Valley Firebirds. She began to work with Bylsma under the Kraken’s minor league team in 2022.
