Ice hockey team sit at second in the Empire Conference

The Roadrunners entered their Thanksgiving break on a high note, winning two of their three games in a row last Friday, Saturday and Sunday. On Friday night, Ramapo took down Jefferson Community College, on Saturday the team fell to Massachusetts Maritime Academy and on Sunday the team defeated Catholic University. All three games took place on the Roadrunners’ home ice.

Beginning with their win Friday, the Roadrunners scored late in the first period thanks to a power play goal from forward Devin Haines. Midway through the second period, the Roadrunners doubled their lead to two with Haines’ second goal of the evening, unassisted. With one minute to go in the period, the Cannoneers got one back thanks to a goal from Owen Bismarck, assisted by Kyle Gionet.

With eight minutes remaining in the third period, Jefferson was able to tie the score at two-a-piece thanks to a goal off the stick of Gionet, assisted by Jack Mills and Carson Barrett. Two minutes later, Robert Wogisch scored the eventual game-winning goal off assists from Adam Moskal and Daniel Phillips. The Roadrunners added two more goals before the period ended, one off the stick of Ty Watson and the other from Matthew Cochran, resulting in a 5-2 win.

In net for Ramapo, Alec Rittenhouse saved 28 of 30 Cannoneer shots on goal, while Jefferson goalie Mason Patnode saved 19 of 24 Roadrunner shots.

On Saturday, Ramapo got a second chance against Mass. Maritime, who beat them 4-2 in October. However, the Buccaneers proved to be too much for the Roadrunners again, winning 4-1. After a scoreless first period, Maritime got on the board midway through the second period thanks to an unassisted power-play goal from Constantino Marrocco.

In the third period, the Roadrunners let the game slip away quickly, allowing three consecutive Buccaneer goals from Ryan Kane, Joey Lizotte and Aidan Weir. Ramapo narrowly avoided the shutout with under two minutes remaining in the game, thanks to a goal from Anthony Fizer, assisted by Wogisch and Moskal.

Rittenhouse started again for the Roadrunners and tallied 32 saves against 36 Maritime shots, while Buccaneer goalie Jack Braga saved 22 of 23 shots from Ramapo.

Looking to end the weekend on a high note, the Roadrunners got out to a scorching hot start Sunday against Catholic University, scoring four unanswered goals in the first period. Fizer got the scoring started with his 17th goal of the year off an assist from Cochran. One minute later, Moskal scored thanks to assists from Wogisch and Brady Vella. In the 16th minute of the quarter, both Phillips and Moskal added goals.

In the second period, the Cardinals scored their first goal of the day off the stick of Will Bruner, assisted by Matthew Hornick. In the third period, Ramapo once again entered the scoring column, with Fizer recording his second goal of the game, assisted by Cochran. Both teams would go on to exchange goals in the final frame of action, with a total of six goals being scored in the period, and the final ending 8-3 in favor of the Roadrunners. In the flurry of goals, Fizer added another, giving him his first hat trick of the year.

In goal, Rittenhouse saved 20 of 23 Cardinal shots, while Catholic goalie Daniel Mark got the start and allowed seven goals against 48 Roadrunner shots. Midway through the third period, the Cardinals made a goalie switch, bringing in CJ Petro, who allowed one goal on three shot attempts.

In what has been an up-and-down season for Ramapo, they currently sit second in the Empire Conference at 10-10. The Roadrunners will take to the ice twice this weekend on Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday night, the team will travel to face the University of Delaware, and on Saturday they’ll head up to face University of New Haven.
