Track and field achieves numerous new records

Ramapo’s men and women’s track track and field teams traveled back to the Ocean Breeze Complex in Staten Island, N.Y. to compete at the Big Apple Invitational this past Saturday, Feb. 8. At this meet, the Roadrunners battled against athletes from D1 and D3 schools within the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

The women’s team performed well, with sophomore Dale Leonard grabbing third place in the mile with a time of 5:00.02 and senior Zoey Cassavell finishing 14th at 5:17.55. Cassavell earned a spot at seventh all-time at Ramapo and 14th at the Invitational. Leonard went on to compete in the 800m, clocking in at 2:20.03 for another third-place finish.

Sophomores Ashley Gordon and Jianna Gorospe posted times of 26.84 seconds and 27.35 seconds in the 200m dash, respectively.

The men’s team also achieved many personal career bests while on the road, as Sebastian Pross and Braden Holm set new records in the weight throw. Pross threw a mark of 16.11m for a second-place finish and secured the number three all-time spot at Ramapo. Holm was not far behind, finishing in sixth place and moving up to the fourth spot on the all-time list with a mark of 15.10m — which happens to be his new personal record.

Senior Terrell Lockett and junior Anthony Gentile competed in the 200m dash for Ramapo. Lockett finished in third place and set a new personal record of 22.44 seconds while Gentile clocked in at 22.91 seconds for ninth overall. Lockett now sits at eighth in the record books for Ramapo’s all-time best.

Junior Brandon Balcacer earned fourth place in the 60m dash, finishing at 7.03 seconds. Gentile and sophomore Logan Natale ran times of 51.41 seconds and 51.61 seconds in the 400m dash, respectively, and finished 11-12.

Sophomore Julian Mignone clocked in at 4:29.76 for a tenth-place finish in the mile, and junior Ryan Pena took home fifth in the 800m at 1:57.40.

Both teams will head to the New York Armory for the New York University DIII Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 15 for their next meet.
