This past week, the women’s basketball team faced two tough losses in their home games against Montclair State University and Rowan University. The Roadrunners lost 79-48 against Montclair State University on Wednesday night, the first of the two games that week.
Senior Alison Ahern and freshman Emma Cartwright both led in points scored for the Roadrunners, racking up 13 points from each respective player. Freshman Damiya Graham added 12 points, as well as another freshman Jocelyn Huancaya, who contributed nine rebounds with six points. Ramapo shot 39% from the field and 40% from the free-throw line during their battle with the Red Hawks.
As for Montclair, freshman Alyssa Craigwell and junior Shannon Hughes both scored 14 points respectively, as well as senior Olivia Vero, who put up 13 points. The Red Hawks shot 49% from the floor, 52% from the three-point line and 73% from the free-throw line during the game.
The second game for the Roadrunners happened on Saturday, Feb. 8 against Rowan University, but the girls unfortunately faced another loss, finishing with a score of 65-41.
Ramapo and Rowan were neck-and-neck in the first quarter, as the Roadrunners scored 12 points against the Profs 15 points. However, in the second quarter, Ramapo only made six points, while Rowan ended with 17. Rowan continued to lead and in the fourth quarter, both teams scored 12 points each.
Ahern continued to shine, as she scored a total of 18 points against the Profs, shooting 50% from the field and making all 6 of her free throws. Sophomore Lauren Flatt scored seven points, as well as four rebounds, two assists and one steal. Junior Brianna Smith added an additional five rebounds as well. This lands the women’s team in ninth place in New Jersey Athletic Conference standings, as they are currently 2-20 for the season.
Rowan senior Kate Herlihy scored 18 points, including four three-pointers. Freshman Abigail Jazmin and junior Jes Mastriano also scored ten points each. Senior Shayla Johnson also made huge contributions offensively, grabbing seven rebounds for the team. Rowan shot 39% from the field, 35% from the three-point line and 78% from the free-throw line.
The women’s next game will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 12 against Rutgers-Newark at 6:00 p.m. on the road.
