Addison Rae continues in era of electric pop with ‘High Fashion’

Addison Rae has done it again, the former TikTok hype house member turned viral pop star surprise released her highly anticipated single “High Fashion” on Feb. 14.

Rae is no stranger to the spotlight, especially during her time dancing with Charli D’amelio on TikTok in 2019, but ever since her feature on Charli XCX “Von Dutch,” Rae has changed her pace and the internet is loving it.

“High Fashion” is a sexy pop track featuring Rae’s breathy vocals mixed with autotune and a bassy dance instrumental. The song is about the push and pull of denial and desire while also being about Rae’s love for clothes over anything else.

“I don’t want cheap love,” sings Rae, “I’d rather get high fashion.”

Rae is no stranger to pop music, as in 2023 she released her EP “AR,” featuring Charli XCX. However, with the release of “Diet Pepsi” at the tail end of “brat summer,” Rae has been working hard on a total rebrand, branching into dance music and experimenting with non-record releases.

Last October, she released “Aquamarine,” a dance track with beachy imagery that emulates a siren song that was later remixed into “Arcamarine” by popular Venezuelan electronic artist Arca.

“High Fashion” definitely fits into this new era of Rae, but personally the song isn’t as catchy as “Diet Pepsi” and doesn’t have the same danceability as “Aquamarine.”

Not to say I didn’t immediately add this song to my music library, just that you would probably find me listening to one of her earlier singles over “High Fashion.” Despite this, Rae’s journey with electronic dance music has just begun and I cannot wait to hear more from the former TikToker, soon-to-be pop star.
