MARINA is back with single ‘BUTTERFLY’

Exciting news for anyone who owned a Tumblr account during the early 2010s — Welsh singer and songwriter Marina Diamandis is making a comeback and she’s ready to spread her wings. On Friday, Diamandis, who goes by MARINA on stage and has previously released under the name Marina and the Diamonds, dropped her latest single “BUTTERFLY.”

“BUTTERFLY” is an upbeat dance pop track that features Diamandis’ angelic vocalization over a fluttering bass and twinkly synths.

“Watch me grow from afar as I turn into a butterfly / Now I’m leavin’ you behind.” Diamandis sings, “Too bad you’ll never see the colours inside me.”

The song is a fun dance track about Diamandis’ personal growth describing how she is distancing herself from the people who bring her down and is better off for it.

The metaphor continues where Diamandis describes them missing out on her beauty once she improves herself, emerging from her chrysalis to “spread [her] wings in the golden light.”

“You just never see me spread my wings / I’m already high / watch my life go, ‘bling, bling,’” Diamandis sings.

The track is her first musical release since her 2021 album “Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land.” During her break from music, Diamandis released a poetry book called “Eat the World” in 2024.

Diamandis released her debut album “The Family Jewels” in 2010 and “Electra Heart” in 2012 as Marina and the Diamonds. These two albums contributed greatly to her recognition in the hyperpop genre and gave listeners a feel for her personal style that set her apart from other musicians.

“BUTTERFLY” feels like something off of her earlier albums with a confident, optimistic twist that shows how she has matured since her heart-on-the-cheek primadonna days back in 2012. This single is definitely a nod at her past sonically. I am more than excited to see where she goes from here.
