British indie artist Matt Maltese released a second single “Always Some MF” ahead of his upcoming album “Hers” on Feb. 27. Maltese’s discography commonly features serene jazzy tracks backing up his beautiful baritone voice.
“Always Some MF” is a relaxed track featuring pianos and saxophones, violins and acoustic guitars. The honeyed song is about Maltese’s dedication to his lover, emphasizing how gorgeous and enchanting she is.
Slow and sweet throughout the opening verse, you could imagine a couple swaying to “Always Some MF” in a waltz. Maltese then comes into the chorus swearing, “there’s always some motherfucker / seeking the affection of my girl.”
The track is still lovely and tooth-rotting, but there is an obvious irony when pairing the vulgarity in Maltese’s possessive chorus with his unending faithfulness to his partner over a melodic piano.
“Let’s play, let’s play motherfucker / you ain’t a fly on the ass of my love for her,” sings Maltese.
The first single Maltese released for “Hers” is titled “Anytime, Anyplace, Anyhow,” another track devoted to his partner. The song is a little more upbeat than “Always Some MF.” Maltese tells his lover that his loyalty is limitless, that even in the event of a minor distance or a temporary separation, one call and he will be there for them.
“I don’t care for Spain when you’re in Shanghai,” sings Maltese. “Anytime, anyplace, anyhow / you’re allowed to treat me like a piece of meat / I don’t care if it’s been a year or if it’s been sixteen.”
Love has always been a common theme in Maltese’ music; he gained popularity in 2018 with the release of “As The World Caves In.” The track details Maltese’ dismissal of an impending apocalyptic disaster in favor of spending his last moments with his lover.
If “Always Some MF” and “Anytime, Anyplace, Anyhow” are anything to go by, Maltese’s upcoming album “Hers” is sure to be a full of strikingly wholesome love songs dedicated to Maltese’s partner.
“Hers” is set to release on May 16 and I am excited to see where this new music venture takes Maltese. Give “Always Some MF” if you’re looking for a sickeningly sweet love song with a touch of irony this spring.
