Jane Remover has made the same amount of history in the world of internet music in five years as some of the most famous bands and artists have done in their entire lives. Her latest single, “Dancing with your eyes closed,” sees her taking her sound back to where it all began.
The 21-year-old has explored a myriad of styles and genres since beginning her production career in the late 2010s, ranging from the emo-infused indietronica of her 2021 debut, “Frailty” to the sweeping shoegaze ballads of “Census Designated” in 2023.
She’s responsible for the creation of the EDM microgenre “Dariacore,” named after the MTV television series “Daria,” which mashes up pop hits and internet memes from a Gen Z childhood with frenetic and distorted electronic percussion.
She’s written scores of songs under the moniker “venturing,” posing as a fictional five-piece rock outfit from Arizona. Now, ahead of her third full-length album, “Revengeseekerz,” Remover runs a victory lap past the sound of her earliest projects with the experience and production mastery gained from her latest works.
“Dancing with your eyes closed,” released on Feb. 26, is the second single in the “Revengeseekerz” album cycle, following the New Year’s Day release “JRJRJR” which revisited her digicore roots with newfound rage rap sensibilities.
The song kicks off with subdued melodic synthesizers and sample work that gave “Frailty” its singular atmosphere, but quickly transitions into a full-fledged club banger with the complex, glitching ear candy you might expect to hear from a 100 gecs project.
She recalls songs and albums past with subtle references in the production; rhythmic patterns from her breakout hit “homeswitcher” and samples from the aforementioned “Dariacore” album trilogy are snuck in throughout the tacks four-minute runtime.
The choruses showcase Remover’s vocal range in full force, switching back and forth between screaming and a whispery falsetto. “Promise I like it like that,” she sings, reminding her listeners that no matter what genres she chooses to tackle, she’ll always hold this sound close to her heart.
It follows that fans of Jane Remover are never quite sure where she’ll take her sound next, but they — myself very much included — always remain excited for the ride nevertheless. These past two singles have been extremely promising releases, and I can’t wait to see what becomes of the full project.
“Revengeseekerz” will be released via deadAir Records in 2025.
