The Ramapo College women’s lacrosse team had an exciting week, picking up a hard-fought 15-13 win against St. Joseph’s College Long Island before falling to SUNY Maritime, 18-6. With these games, the Roadrunners now hold a 3-1 record for the season.
Ramapo battled through a close game against St. Joseph’s, earning their third straight victory. Both teams came out strong in the first quarter, exchanging goals and ending tied at 4-4. Junior Erin Smeilus got things started for Ramapo, scoring off a pass from graduate student Esme Espinosa. Junior Leah Whitney, freshman Kassidy Baez and Smeilus kept the offense going to keep the game even.
In the second quarter, Ramapo pulled ahead slightly, outscoring St. Joseph’s 4-3 to take a 9-7 lead at halftime. Whitney, senior Lauren Travaglini and Espinosa all found the net to help build the lead. The Roadrunners kept going in the third quarter, extending their score to 13-9. However, St. Joseph’s came back with four straight goals to tie things up at 13-13 heading into the final quarter.
That’s when Smeilus scored a goal off a pass from Baez, with 5:21 left in the game. A few minutes later, she added another goal with help from Espinosa, sealing the 15-13 win.
On defense, junior Bethany Glaser and goalkeeper Daniella Indomenico were key players. Glaser recorded five ground balls and three caused turnovers, while Indomenico made 10 saves to help secure the win. Whitney led the offense with four goals, while Travaglini, Smeilus and Baez each added three. Ramapo outshot St. Joseph’s 30-28.
After their big win, the Roadrunners faced a tough match against Maritime College, who ended their winning streak with a devastating 18-6 loss.
Things started off strong for Ramapo, with Glaser scoring the first goal of the game just a few minutes in. Maritime quickly took over, scoring six unanswered goals to end the first quarter with a 6-1 lead.
Ramapo fought back in the second quarter, adding three goals from Glaser, Travaglini and senior Jada Oddo. However, Maritime kept up their strong attack, scoring five more times to take an 11-4 lead into halftime.
Maritime continued their scoring streak in the second half, adding three more goals before Smeilus answered with back-to-back goals for Ramapo, as Oddo and Baez each earned an assist. The Privateers kept control, scoring three more times in the final quarter to take the 18-6 win.
Glaser led the Roadrunners with two goals, eight ground balls and three caused turnovers, also reaching a big milestone with her 100th career draw control. Smeilus also had two goals, while Travaglini and Oddo each scored once. In goal, Indomenico made seven saves. Maritime was led by Gabrielle Nicolosi, who had an impressive 15 points.
Ramapo returns to action on Monday, March 10 when they travel to Farmingdale State College for a non-conference game at 7 p.m.
