OVP hosts Her Story: Our Fight tabling

The Office of Violence Prevention kicked off Women’s HerStory Month on Monday, March 3 with a tabling in the Fishbowl titled “Her Story: Our Fight.”

Sophomore Psychology Major and Violence Intervention Peer Brooke Newland put the tabling together, displaying an interactive board where students passing by could learn important statistics and explanations of psychological abuse, sexual violence and domestic violence.

The board also provided education on warning signs that someone may be in an abusive relationship, including being afraid of your partner, being isolated from family and friends, and having your partner closely monitor where you go, what you do and who you meet.

The right side of the board displayed important resources for Ramapo students, including the number for the Office of Violence Prevention, Title IX, Counseling Services and Public Safety.

In the middle of the board, students had the opportunity to participate in “True or False” with a variety of different stereotypes and assumptions of abuse, including the false notions that domestic violence is caused by alcohol and drugs and that only women can be victims of abuse.

“Our tabling was designed to address the issue of domestic, sexual and psychological abuse against women,” said Newland. “The event served as an informational outlet where students were provided with resources to not only educate themselves on the disheartening reality of interpersonal violence, but to also share the knowledge gained from event with their fellow peers on campus.”
