‘Chemistry’ by Gigi Perez is devastatingly beautiful

Singer-songwriter Gigi Perez recently released another single titled “Chemistry,” adding to her EP with songs “Fable” and “Sailor Song.”

The song resembles some of Perez’s other work, but also encapsulates a completely different feel and vibe. It is an electrically powerful, emotionally vulnerable song with devastating lyrics behind an upbeat track.

The lyrics of the song breathe feelings of secret chemistry and desire. The chorus of the song repeats, “But don’t you feel a little stuck / Every time we’re out of touch? / I will dig up what you hide,” continuing with, “Crying doesn’t suit you well / Don’t you know? I’ll never tell a soul about our secret life.”

Perez contemplates the relationship’s clandestine nature and the consequences that it has, while also feeling a sense of security in the secrecy that the relationship holds.

The song continues to address this secrecy and the act of concealing the relationship from family. “Your mother looks and says / ‘Some things we just don’t talk about.’” Perez sings about the pressure that family has on relationships, particularly queer ones.

In its closing lines, the song is a desperate plea from Perez to remain trapped in this secret relationship. “What I’d like to do / Is make a deal with you / Make a deal with you” Perez desires to hold onto this secret relationship, no matter the cost. She repeats the words, “With you, with you, with you, with you” showing her desperation to not split from this person.

Perez never fails to disappoint me with her songs. As a queer person, her songs are immensely relatable and devastatingly beautiful.
