Last week, Polyester Zine sat down with the multitalented Nell Tiger Free to discuss her work on “The First Omen” and her upcoming EP, “Worst Day Of My Life (so far).”
Free unveiled the second single from the project, titled “Love of My Life” on Feb. 14. Free’s ethereal soprano voice floats over a lovely, soft melody in this three-and-a-half minute track. Although it may sound sweet at first, the lyrics provide a stark contrast.
“One last look / When you still looked like you / If I could have one more kiss / When you didn’t taste like someone new,” she laments in the opening lines, setting the tone for a song that feels both intimate and devastating.
Aside from being a fantastic actress and absolutely killing it in “The First Omen,” she expertly conveys emotion through music. This was evident in her first single, “Do I Just Keep Making Things Worse?” and “Love of My Life” only solidifies it.
The song builds up to a crushing chorus, her voice growing in melancholy: “Love of my life / You fucking BROKE it / You took the heart that I gave / And split it wide open.”
These delicate vocals paired with the fragile words and tender melody are reminiscent of Mitski and Phoebe Bridgers, but Free certainly brings something new to the table.
She is definitely a celebrity to keep your eyes on right now. I could not be more excited for the release of the full EP.
