Petite League released their second single from their upcoming album “Dead Star City Tours” last Friday. The track is titled “Ghosts” and is an exciting addition to the band’s discography.
The song is an indie rock track featuring a stellar electric guitar, giving “Ghosts” a beachy sound. The lyrics focus on sleepless summer nights spent being haunted by a lover.
“No one keeps me awake at night like you / Living with ghosts of the heart,” sings frontman Lorenzo Gillis Cook in the chorus.
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again: I love this band’s lyrics. I also usually enjoy the indie start-up sound that accompanies Petite League’s lyrics, but I feel like the instrumental of this song overshadows the vocals a little too much. The bass is loud, taking attention away from Cook’s singing.
At first, my favorite lyrics on this song had to be the heavily metaphored and well-timed verses but the bridge comes in just after the two-minute mark to steal the show.
“I’ve got a fool’s heart on limited edition / Found in a rare collector bin / One of one but I would never trade it in / Cuz it’s the only one that haunts my days / Ghosts like you will never go away.”
The band was founded by Cook and bandmate Henry Schoonmaker in college and features live performance members Adam Greenberg and Kevin McCallum. Petite League dropped their first album “Slugger” in 2015 establishing their under-produced sound and baseball themes.
Since then, the band has been steadily releasing music over the years. In February, the band released their first single, “Paradise Park,” for “Dead Star City Tours.” The single is a groovy number about Cook’s longing for the dancefloor.
With “Paradise Park” and “Ghosts” as precursors to Petite League’s upcoming album, I am more than excited to hear what else the band has in store for fans with the release of “Dead Star City Tour” on May 30.
