Maryland Terrapins secure spot in Sweet 16

In a thrilling second-round matchup of the 2025 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship, the Maryland Terrapins outlasted the Alabama Crimson Tide 111-108 in overtime to punch their ticket to the Sweet 16.

The back-and-forth match featured six lead changes and 12 ties, making it one of the most exciting games of the tournament so far.

Alabama’s Sarah Ashlee Barker was unstoppable for the Crimson Tide, scoring a school-record 45 points on 17-of-25 shooting. She also set a new program record for most field goals in a single game and tied for the fourth-most points ever scored in an NCAA Tournament contest. Barker’s performance helped Alabama build a 17-point lead in the third quarter, but Maryland fought back.

On Maryland’s side, Sarah Te-Biasu delivered in the clutch, scoring 26 points, including 10 in overtime. Shyanne Sellers led the Terps with 28 points, while Kaylene Smikle (23 points) and Allie Kubek (19 points, 12 rebounds) played key roles in Maryland’s comeback. The Terps shot 10-of-13 in the second overtime to secure the win.

The victory sends Maryland to its 12th Sweet 16 under head coach Brenda Frese, where they will face No. 1 seed South Carolina this Friday. Alabama, meanwhile, finished its season at 24-9, coming just short of its first Sweet 16 appearance since 1998.
