Instant number one New York Times Bestselling author of contemporary romance Lucy Score released her new novel, “Story of My Life,” on March 11, introducing a new series to her longtime fans. Score is a master of romance, with her banter filled books always creating a new encapsulating world of small town romance with some added chemistry.
As an avid reader of all things Score and romance novels, I have been anxiously awaiting this book to release so that I can once again be inside the magical world of her books. With elements like a grumpy-sunshine romance, small town vibes, found family and a fixer-upper gone wrong, this book has every bit of a Hallmark movie paired with the familiar humor of Score.
The new book, much like her other books, is a dual point-of-view that follows each of the main characters. Each section of the book dives into the minds of the characters and showcases what they really feel for each other even though they are both too afraid to take the jump and be together. This book follows former romance novelist Hazel and hot contractor Campbell, who she meets when she moves to a small town to find inspiration for her next book.
“Story of My Life” starts out with Hazel, who has been through a rough patch when it comes to her divorce and writing career. Hazel took an impromptu break in writing and is now struggling to make ends meet. She must strive to write a new book and get back out there to give her readers something new.
The key to all her problems seems to be to take a page out of Hazel’s own books — a fresh start in a small town in Pennsylvania. When she arrives to start her new life, she realizes that the town is not really as it seems, but she is determined to make it work for the sake of her career.
With the brooding contractor Campbell and his brothers there to help her get her house in working order and a raccoon named Bertha to keep her company, Hazel must write and finish her new book so that she can once again make it as an author.
While this is one of the several books that I have read of Score’s, her books never get old. She brings something new to her books every time while also keeping some classic notes of her story and writing style that gets better with every read. She is one of those authors that make her books seem like reality so that her readers can connect with her characters and fully become the story. She makes you believe that all love is possible no matter the circumstances.
Throughout the book I could not wait to get to the end to see how everything fell together and where all the characters would end up. While it was seen from the beginning and even more as you read on, it was exciting seeing how all the characters came together at the end creating such a tight knit small town community that would give any Hallmark lover chills.
This relationship, when compared to the other ones in the romance book universe, was one of the most adult and natural relationships I have ever read. There was a slight miscommunication but it came from a place where you can understand and see where she is coming from and where he had gone wrong.
The third act breakup was not something that came out of nowhere to add a bit of conflict to the book to make you keep reading. The characters talk it through and realize that they needed to be apart to work on themselves before being ready to be with each other. Both characters are strong willed and ready to do the right thing in the pursuit of their happiness even if it means talking it out and facing what you truly are afraid of.
If you love anything to do with romance or like a Hallmark-esc story then this book is a must read for you. It has everything you want with the added banter from the grumpy sunshine romance and the usual humor from Score. Get ready for an introduction to the wonderful world of Story Lake.
