Brittany Broski has proved to her loyal followers that she can do it all. The internet sensation surprise released her first original single “The Sun” on Friday, just two weeks after her debut into the music world with a cover of Harry Styles’ “Adore You.”
I have been a dedicated fan of Broski’s content on YouTube and TikTok for years, and even though she has given sneak peaks of her singing abilities and made abundantly clear her passion for music, I was shocked to see her release original music.
Broski’s cover of Harry Styles’ “Adore You” was beautiful, but “The Sun,” written by Broski herself, went above and beyond my expectations.
“How am I too good and still not enough / If I’m hanging the stars in your sky / and you spin me around ‘til you’re done / I’ll give you my light but I can’t be the sun,” sings Broski, delving into her fears of losing herself to a relationship with another person who doesn’t prioritize her.
Stunning lyricism aside, Broski’s voice is also absolutely breathtaking. In an interview with Billboard, Broski spoke to the musical influences that shaped the making of “The Sun.”
Broski described her sound as being informed by artists like Hozier, Florence and the Machine and Chris Stapleton as well as the “bluesy rock and roll” of her childhood and I can absolutely hear each of those influences in this song. Broski’s voice takes on a subtle and sultry rock sound that fits her perfectly.
Something that has always drawn me to Broski’s content on YouTube is her versatility — she is hilarious and often very unserious, but in the same breath is extremely intelligent and will have very thought provoking conversations on her podcast “The Broski Report” — and this is just another facet of her range of talents.
I am not always the biggest fan of when social media personalities start making music just because they have the resources to do so at their fingertips, but I truly believe that Broski is an exception to this rule.
“The Sun” is so much more than just a song made by someone who makes silly videos on the internet and Broski deserves all her flowers for it. I can’t wait to listen to more from her.
