The women’s lacrosse team has been on the attack lately, taking on back-to-back games in early April. The Roadrunners most recently faced the Delaware Valley University Aggies on April 2 and the Rowan University Profs on April 4.
In the first match, the Aggies opened the scoring with a goal from Anna Kimbel. The Roadrunners quickly responded with junior Erin Smeilus and senior Lauren Travaglini scoring back-to-back goals, both assisted by Esme Espinosa.
Junior Bethany Glaser followed with an unassisted goal before Charley Lengel-Kramer answered for the Aggies, assisted by Kimbel. Just before the end of the first period, freshman Kassidy Baez added one more goal for Ramapo with help from Glaser, giving the Roadrunners a 4-2 lead.
Baez kicked off the second period with another goal, this time assisted by junior Leah Whitney. Delaware’s Kyra McKeegan found the net soon after, but Espinosa answered with an unassisted goal of her own.
While the Aggies managed one more in the second from Ashley Birmingham, the Roadrunners took control, acquiring four additional goals — Baez from Espinosa, Glaser and two from Whitney.
Whitney stayed hot in the third, scoring the first goal of the period. Travaglini, Smeilus and Glaser followed, with Baez assisting on Travaglini’s. With the Roadrunners up 14-4, Delaware pushed back with goals from McKeegan and Lengel-Kramer to close the third.
The Aggies came out strong in the fourth, scoring four more, but Glaser and Smeilus helped Ramapo regain momentum, Glaser with an unassisted goal and Smeilus assisted by Espinosa. Although Birmingham and McKeegan scored two more before the final whistle, the Roadrunners sealed the win, 16-12.
Glaser had a standout performance with four ground balls, three caused turnovers and eight draw controls. Baez and Whitney each added three ground balls, while Travaglini finished with seven ground balls and seven draw controls.
Goalie Daniella Indomenico made seven saves, including the 100th of her career. Senior Alyssa Curto added three more as well.
Heading into their game against Rowan University, the Roadrunners held a 5-3 overall record. Unfortunately, their first NJAC match ended in a tough 22-1 loss.
The Profs came out firing, scoring eight in the first period and four in the second before Glaser finally got one on the board for Ramapo with an unassisted goal. Rowan added two more before halftime, followed by five in the third and three in the fourth.
Espinosa and Smeilus each recorded a shot on goal. Travaglini acquired three caused turnovers, five draw controls and two ground balls — marking the 100th draw control of her career. Smeilus contributed five draw controls, three caused turnovers and two ground balls. Junior Kristina McClain also chipped in with two caused turnovers.
The women take on Montclair State University on April 12 at 7 p.m. for their next matchup. They sit 5-4 overall and 0-1 in the NJAC conference.
