The Ramapo College field hockey team looked to win one of six NJAC games scheduled for this season when they took to the field at the Athletic Center Turf on Saturday afternoon. The matchup was against the No. 13 ranked Montclair State Red Hawks, but the Roadrunners suffered a loss with a score of 6-1.
The Roadrunners closed the season with a 2-12 overall record, and 0-6 in the conference. The Red Hawks advanced to the No. 2 seed in the conference with an overall record of 15-5. They also finished the season with a 5-1 NJAC record.
Junior goalie Emily Wisneski remained positive about the score and the way the season ended.
“Despite what the score shows, I think our team played a really great game,” she stated. “Whenever you’re playing a nationally ranked team you know its going to be a challenge. But our team came together and played the way we knew we could, and the best that we could.”
Wisneski ended the season with a .725 save percentage and a goals against average of 3.82
Ramapo held Montclair to a 1-0 lead in the first half of the game. It was not until almost 34 minutes into the half that the Red Hawks got on the scoreboard with a goal from Alexis Ambrosino, assisted by Kailey Dalgauer. The Roadrunners’ defense remained resilient, however, considering they were outshot 24-1 at the end of the first half.
In the second half, the Red Hawks came back and scored five more goals to give them a six-goal lead. Ramapo finally got on the board 55 minutes into the game when sophomore Ronni Wellema collected her first goal of the year, a shot scored off of a penalty corner. Ramapo earned four total penalty shots compared to Montclair’s 15.
Although Montclair ended up outshooting the Roadrunners 36-5 overall in the game, senior Emily Kramer recorded 23 saves while Wellema, Lauren Berry and Stacey Faria each recorded a defensive save.
Prior to the start of the game, the Roadrunners recognized the seniors at their last collegiate game. Healy, Bacino and goalie Emily Kramer were all honored before the game started.
“Senior Day was a great way to celebrate our seniors for everything they have contributed to our program over the past four years,” said Wisneski. “We’re going to miss them all so much, but at the same time, we wish them the best of luck after graduation.”
“As a senior, I vould not have asked for a better final game,” said Kramer. “Everyone on that field gave it their all against one of the top teams in the nation, and it showed. Our energy was up, and we were just having fun playing together for the last time. I honestly couldn’t have dreamed of a better way to finish my time on the field.”
